While driving my son to his friend’s house recently, we headed east toward the morning sun. The light was intense and almost blinding. The measly flip-down visor on the driver’s side did nothing to ease the burn.

My eyes were watering from the piercing rays of light. I noticed that my kid was not having the same discomfort as I was. My son is one of those lucky tall folks. Judging by how insufficient our family car’s sun visors are, I am betting the manufacturer of the vehicle is a tall person too. I reached under the car seat, looking for my old phone book, my favorite makeshift booster seat.

When my son asked me what I was looking for, I muttered about needing to put a new phone book in the car so I could be taller too and the look on his face was a combination of annoyance and confusion. So I tried to clarify. “Sometimes to be taller I sit on a phone book.”

He looked even more puzzled as I drove the last few blocks with my hand pressed to my forehead in a strange salute to block the brightness.
